6 Tips for Moving a Couch into a Loft With a Sprial Staircase

Blog

A loft and a spiral staircase look awesome, but this setup also makes it challenging to move furniture into these spaces. Luckily, it is possible. You just need the right approach.

If you're trying to move a couch into a loft that's not easy to access, keep these tips in mind.

1. Measure the loft or window openings.

To get the couch into the loft, you will need to push it through a window or over the loft railing. Measure both of these openings and ensure they're big enough for the couch. You don't want to hoist up a couch and then realise your opening is too small. Make sure to measure the couch at its highest and widest points.

2. Set up ropes and a pulley.

Whether you're going to hoist the couch over the loft railing or into a window, you can use ropes and a pulley to lift up the couch. Make sure that you use strong ropes and attach them securely.

3. Consider using a ladder as a guide.

Some people use a ladder as a guide. If you take this option, make sure that you don't stand on the ladder. Simply lean the ladder so that it runs from the ground to the top of the railing or the window opening. Then, rest the couch on the ladder and use it as a guide while you pull the couch up with the pulley.

4. Take apart the furniture.

You will need to take apart some of the couch to make this process possible. Take off the feet so that you can slide the couch up the ladder. Also, remove cushions so they don't get in your way while you're moving the couch.

In some cases, people completely take apart couches. Then, they move them in small pieces and reassemble them. This can be difficult if you're not familiar with reupholstery or carpentry.

5. Make sure you have plenty of people on both ends.

You need people above and below the couch. They need to be strong enough to lift the couch from the inside. They also need to be able to move quickly or catch the couch if it falls down.

6. Hire a furniture removalist.

The easiest way to get a couch into a loft with a spiral staircase is to hire a furniture removalist. A removalist knows exactly how to get couches or other large pieces of furniture into challenging areas. They are also insured. This protects the value of your furniture if anything gets damaged during the move.

Contact a local removalist for more information.

How to Maximise Self Storage Space

Hi, my name is Allie and I help people declutter their homes. While I like to encourage my clients to get rid of all the stuff they don’t need so they can enjoy more space at home, this isn’t always possible. To completely declutter their homes, some of my clients need to use self storage units to store useful stuff that they don’t use every day but that they do need to keep. Having helped a few people set up storage units, I’ve got to know a lot about how much space to hire and how to fill it. With a bit of know-how and careful packing, you can fit a lot more than you think into a small unit. I started this site to pass on some of these tips – hope they help you make the most of your storage space!
